EVO Grain Free Turkey and Chicken Formula Dry Dog Food Review

EVO Grain Free Turkey and Chicken Formula Dry Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the ONLY dog food my Shepherd mix will eat. For the 2 reviews above, your dogs are unique and prob. have an intolerance. Evo is a wonderful food, Eukanuba has MANY things that are horrible for your dog to eat. Evo has NO corn or by-products which are very bad for dogs. It is a high protein food so its not great for 7+ year old dogs but wonderful for normal adult dogs. Perfect for dogs with grain allergies. Whenever looking for food stay away from dog foods with ANY corn or by-products. Eukanuba and Iams are CONSTANTLY recalling their food. I work at a local pet shop and in the past year they have had recalls 5+ times, no other food has been recalled.

Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Wetlands Canine Formula with Roasted Wild Fowl, 30-Pound Bag Review

Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Wetlands Canine Formula with Roasted Wild Fowl, 30-Pound Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our lab is a picky eater to the point that she was about 10% underweight just eating barely enough to keep her alive. That was on Lg Breed Puppy Eukanuba (sp?). Then, I ignorantly switched her to Purina Puppy Chow before I knew how bad corn is for dogs, the number one ingredient of that awful formula. She didn't really like that, either, thankfully. Then, I switched her to Large Breed Puppy EVO. She liked that a bit better, and it didn't have corn. But, I still had to put a bit of hot water on it and essentially drag her to the bowl. She did gain weight, though.
Then, EUREKA, we found Taste of the Wild. NO GRAIN!! All the nutrition she needs - I think she eats better than we do with this stuff. I guessed that being a bird dog she'd like the Roasted Fowl flavor. I opened the bag in the store and she wolfed it down like nothing else I'd ever seen.
Since then she's eaten the amount of food she's supposed to for her age and weight with no water added or cajoling into into eating. Granted, she's still not a huge eater, but by the end of the day her allotment is eaten. Her weight is perfect, and she really does like the food. I'm glad I don't have to add water so her teeth stay clean - it's nice and crunchy. Her coat is gorgeous and her muscles rippling (we exercise her a lot). She's got an amazing physique, and her dry skin/dandruff seems to be markedly reduced.
Taste of the Wild is worth every penny, and I believe in my heart that she'll live a longer, healthier life (possibly years longer) for our having found it. Thank God for Taste of the Wild. We love her so much and this is the best dog food out there.

These are incredibly small, about the size of a nickel. My dogs barely tasted them as they ate them, and I found myself having to give them a handful at a time for them to be meaningful. If you have small dogs perhpas these will work, but my Rotties quickly became bored.

I have 2 very picky eater cats (2.5 y/o). Tried few different healthy dry foods, and this seemed to be their favorite - dove right into the bag, the second we opened it (never happened before, with any other food).
A lot of times they choose it over the canned food - which they love! We also noticed that their coat got very glossy and silky. We get a lot of compliments :) Thanks Wilderness!

Nature's Variety Instinct Beef Formula Canned Cat Food Review

Nature's Variety Instinct Beef Formula Canned Cat Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was so happy to find this high quality food for our Abyssinians. They need the high level of protein, as they are very active cats. One of our three kitties seems to be allergic to nearly everything (all poultry - chicken, turkey, even duck though not as bad, grains, etc.). This food is one of the few brands that offers single protein sources (for instance, this is beef and does not contain any chicken, as many "beef" pet foods do), which helped us find a food to which our cat does not seem to be allergic. He no longer licks bald patches and isn't constantly vommitting. It's been tough to find a food that works for him and isn't too rich for his two little brothers. This has done the trick. The Instinct canned rabbit and venison are other flavors they enjoyed, but the beef has given us the best results. We supplement their diet with dry "Herring and Sweet Potato" so they can free feed on that throughout the day. Our kitties are healthy, happy, and have beautiful shiny coats. I fully recommend this product line.

Orijen Large Breed Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food Review

Orijen Large Breed Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm writing as the owner of two Chocolate Labrador Retrievers. My dogs both eat Orijen food, although my 3 year old eats the adult formula (we alternate between 15 lb bags of the regular adult and the fish adult varieties.) This brand of dog food is worth the high price and difficulty in finding it to buy!
My 13 month old lab is a powerhouse of energy! She looks like a wet otter when dry, her coat is so shiny and sleek! We went through several varieties of food trying to combat her terrible gas after eating and thankfully found this food, which our puppy loves; so much so that we changed our older lab to the adult version about 3 months ago. Both dogs are thriving, and LOVE meal time (although to be fair, they are labs and would likely chow down average grocery store dog food, too). I can use the dry puppy food as treat rewards when working with my younger dog. She never tires of it!
I'm writing my review mainly because I read another reviewer who INCORRECTLY claimed this food is not appropriate for large breed pups. Although the reviewer seem well-intentioned, they are not fully informed. Read the summary below from Orijen regarding their large breed puppy food and the hip dysplasia issue the other reviewer is concerned with. Of more concern is a high ASH CONTENT in puppy food, NOT simply a high protein content, which puppies actually need for optimal growth.
"Orijen Puppy Food: Grain Free Large Breed was formulated because in nature, puppies are facultative carnivores - they thrive on a varied diet of meats with smaller amounts of fruits, vegetables and grasses. Puppies are biologically adapted to process proteins as an energy source, and need animal protein for healthy growth and building strong organs, skin and coat.
High in protein and low in carbohydrate, ORIJEN PUPPY FOOD is a grain-free formula that replicates the same rich and diverse balance of meats, fruits, vegetables and grasses that puppies and young dogs would encounter in a wilderness setting.
By utilizing special low-ash chicken and fish ingredients, ORIJEN PUPPY LARGE avoids the high ash levels--and subsequently elevated calcium and phosphorus--that are a common concern for large breed puppy owners on high-protein diets. Low-ash ORIJEN features perfectly balanced natural-source minerals, fortified with ocean source glucosamine and chondroitin to nutritionally support healthy bones and joints. Orijen Dog Food is our top-of-the-line dry dog food!"

Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 15-Pound Bag Review

Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food, Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon, 15-Pound Bag
Average Reviews:

We have a 2 year old King Cavalier. He has had digestive issues since being puppy. We've tried everything...5 different foods, both wet and dry...even was on Prescription ID for a period of time at the Vet's recommendation. Nothing seemed to work.
Someone suggested Taste of the Wild Salmon. WOW!!! Not only is my dog eating, but his stools are perfect in color and consistency. We were on Buffalo Blue, but that seemed to be hit or miss as well...causing many days of vomit and diarrhea. Again, when we changed to Taste of the Wild- everything disappeared...not more vomit, not more diarrhea.
Granted, it's like wine, some will like it, some will not. No need for negative reviews, but keep in mind, if nothing else works for your dog's digestive system, why not try it. We did...and we are hooked now...so is Bodie :-)

Horizon Legacy Grain Free Adult Formula Dry Cat Food Review

Horizon Legacy Grain Free Adult Formula Dry Cat Food
Average Reviews:

I tried this food on 16 different cats and it was NOT popular with them. The pickier ones refused to eat it and the not so picky ones tolerated it but mainly after I mixed it with other dry food & canned food. This food is expensive and I was impressed with the grain-free ingredient list...but at the end of the day I need my cats to EAT and ENJOY the food, which they really didn't. My cats eat a variety of food including homemade raw, grain-free dry & canned & non grain-free dry & canned. This Horizon Legacy dry food just didn't cut it. I will not purchase this again.

Orijen Senior Formula Dry Dog Food Review

Orijen Senior Formula Dry Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recent research has shown that senior dogs with healthy kidneys benefit from higher levels of protein. I fed my 12 y/o Great Dane "Orijen Senior" for about a year. His vet couldn't believe how young he looked and acted. Eventually, I had to switch to a different brand (which happened to have lower protein) because my dog was allergic to one of the ingredients in Orijen Senior. Since I switched him to the lower protein food a few months ago, he has exhibited visible muscle wasting in his rear end and has lost a great deal of vitality. I can no longer feed him Orijen Senior due to his allergy, but I intend to switch him to another Orijen product as soon as I run out of my current bag of non-Orijen food.

Orijen Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food Review

Orijen Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Currently I have a five months old bichon frise. When I first got him as a puppy, I thought I picked out the best food for him, Blue Buffalo at Petsmart. However, when I got home, I did more research and found Orijen. As owners of bichons, or malteses, or poodles know, they tend to have problems with tear staining because of their white fur. Since I already got him Blue Buffalo, I thought I'll finish it before switching. Because of the tomato pomace (it's the leftover tomato seed, pulp, and skin) in the ingredients list, he had tear staining problems. I did nightly cleanings of his eyes, but it was still noticeable.
Now it's been a month since Orijen Puppy, and I just realized that it's been a few weeks since I had to clean his eyes. Even my friends who visit us constantly commented on just how clean and bright his eyes look.
Besides helping with the tear staining, Orijen is an all-around great food. I've also noticed his coat has a sheen to it. His poops are solid, not too soft or hard. He loves it, gobbles it down each time. I am extremely excited about feeding him this awesome food! And I will whole-heartedly recommend this dog food to anyone. It's totally worth it.

Orijen Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food Review

Orijen Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pet food has an immense range of quality that you can very roughly categorize into three levels. (1) super cheap food that's basically feeding your dog garbage (1-2 stars); (2) food that's a good compromise on price and quality, containing some ingredients that aren't ideal but overall a healthy product (3-4 stars); and (3) "price is no object" foods that make no compromises (5-6 stars). Orijen doesn't just fall into category 3, it's the best of it. It's expensive, but you will not find a better dog food anywhere. Period.
Orijen is a Canada-based company that raises its own chickens, employs its own fisherman to catch fish and deliver them fresh, uses whole eggs instead of dried egg products, and loads its products with the highest quality ingredients you'll ever find in dog food. It's good for your dog's muscles, heart, coat, skin, and is the most biologically appropriate dry dog food there is. Instead of grains for the carb content that it needs to form the kibble, Orijen uses highly digestible fruits and vegetables with nutritious antioxidants and vitamins.
Check out the first 6 ingredients in this product: Fresh deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, fresh deboned pacific salmon (a natural source of DHA and EPA), herring meal. Meat, meat, meat, good carbs, meat, meat.
Compare that to the first 6 ingredients in Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites Dry Dog Food, which I just selected by picking the first large size that came up in a search for "hill's science diet dry dog food." Chicken, ground whole grain corn, ground whole grain sorghum, ground whole grain wheat, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal. Meat, grain, grain, grain, low-quality animal filler like beaks and feet, and more grain. It's loaded with grains that are cheap and known to be difficult to digest, often the cause of allergic reactions in dogs, and not nutritious.
If you want a good compromise product, go for something like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Dry Dog Food for Adult Dog, Chicken Flavor, 35 Pound Bag, a very good food that's a bit more affordable than Orijen. If you want the best of the best for your fuzzy-faced friend(s), get Orijen.
Final note: this is extremely rich food. Introduce it very slowly, even more slowly than you normally would a new food, and expect some loose stools during the process. We started with 1/6 new food and upped it by 1/6 every week, so we took a month a half to transition completely to Orijen. That helped a lot.

AvoDerm Natural Small Breed Puppy Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula Dry Puppy Food Review

AvoDerm Natural Small Breed Puppy Chicken Meal and Brown Rice Formula Dry Puppy Food
Average Reviews:

My chihuahua puppy did so well on this food, but then I could not find it anymore. I tried a new food, but she had diarrhea and bloody mucous. Finally I put her on the Avoderm Small Breed Adult food as the formulation is a lot like the small breed puppy version, except with a little less protein. My puppy is 8 months old now so I figured it was okay. Now she is thriving again -- nicely formed stool, very silky coat that is luxurious to touch, and lots and lots of cheerful energy. I am not kidding. I hate paying a premium price and having to go way out of my way to buy Avoderm, but my dog does so well on it that I am going to keep her on it. How much can a 3 pound dog eat, anyway.

I live with 5 felines and they just can't get enough of Addiction - Salmon! I don't feed it to them everyday being the cost is up there, but they know where it is and they ask for it every opportunity they get! I am very pleased that this is a quality food that we can depend on. Just wish it was sold in larger quantities and a little more resonable price.

ZiwiPeak Real Meat Grain Free Air Dried Raw Dog Food, Venison, 2.2lb Review

ZiwiPeak Real Meat Grain Free Air Dried Raw Dog Food, Venison, 2.2lb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stuff is so worth it, and when you do the math, it's actually a bargain. More on that later....
Some background: My dog is an 80 pound American Pit Bull Terrier. He is the love of my life (ok, he's a tie with my husband). He has horrible allergies, both environmental and food. Because of this, his doggie dermatologist (yep, there's dermatologists out there just for animals!) has him on an elimination diet of just venison. Being that I completely spoil my dog I've been looking for high quality venison treats to feed him when I stumbled upon the ZiwiPeak venison on Amazon. I'd not heard of ZiwiPeak, but when I looked at how few ingredients were in there and did a little research, I decided it sounded about as close to bambi in a bag as I could get (sorry, I know that's a sad visual...). So, I ordered a few bags of the ZiwiPeak Venison treats. Titan went mad for them. It was as if I was sprinkling him with magical venison fairy dust and he would do anything so long as I would continue to shower him with those heavenly venison squares. You see, it's raw air dried venison, and it comes in these little compact squares about the size of a dime of venison jerky. But it's still soft, almost velvety, as it is still raw.
Titan suffers from a tiny case of separation anxiety, so recently when I had to leave him alone for a while and I was fresh out of bambi bones, I put a handful on top of his food and tip toed towards the door. He barely lifted his head from the bowl. For insurance, I threw a half empty bag of the ZiwiPeak Venison treats on the floor just as I slipped out the door...he noticed the bag, but kept eating from his bowl, pushing it around and digging through the kibble with his nose to sniff out the ZiwiPeak squares as if a pig searching for truffles in the south of France. When I returned a couple of hours later, I searched the house for evidence that he wasn't pleased with my departure. Apart from the garbage being knocked over (my fault for leaving it full, bad mom!) the place was fine.
Later when I went to put down his dinner, Titan sat at the entrance of the kitchen and stared at the cabinet where the venison treats were kept. When I told him to go and eat, he stayed put, staring at the cabinet. I added a little canned venison to entice him. No go. Finally I poured a little bit of the ZiwiPeak Venison on top and he ran to his bowl and started eating. Now, he will not go near the bowl unless there is a hefty portion of ZP in there. Figuring I could save some money, I moved up from the treats to the 2.2 pound bag. Once I went through that in a week, I moved on to the 11 pound bag. I haven't made the complete transition to just ZP in his bowl, as I'm still mixing it in with his old stuff, but it's just a matter of time. The vet has had Titan on one of those vet prescribed diets, which, when I looked at the ingredients on that bag, not only could I not pronounce most of them, but the list was HUGE and the first ingredient was POTATO!
But back to my point: I've bought venison treats for Titan that were anywhere from $10 for 5 or 6 ounces, (which translates to $30 per pound) to $44 per pound for venison jerky (and I paid it!!). So, at $9 a pound, the ZiwiPeak Venison is actually a bargain. And, it is high quality. Not to mention, you know how sometimes your dog eats a bowl of food and then throws up and the vomit looks like a mixture of spongy kibble and foam? Titan's never had that with this stuff. I think it's because the ZP is so close to the natural thing that there isn't anything in there to cause it to expand which then causes him to throw up.
So yes, overall, I'm very happy with the product line. I think it's a pretty cool thing that I can use his food as treats and he still goes mad for it (much like a toddler with cheerios!). I'll be experimenting with some of the other varieties once I'm allowed to introduce other foods per the doggie dermatologist; and I will be trying out the ZP canned as well.

We have tried other natural dog foods, but they all had grain fillers in them and while our dog liked some of them she never reacted the way she does with this natural no grain dog food. She can hardly wait at feeding time and she gobbles it down and licks the bowl clean. She seems to be more energetic since eating Canidae no grain. I doubt that we will ever change.
