Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats for Dogs Review

Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats for Dogs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Upon the initial pet food recall news, I immediately began my investigation into the healthiest food choices for my pets. Although I am already diligent as a pet parent of eight, and none of the foods we use were recalled, I still felt I wanted to go even MORE natural. In doing this research, I found out that not only does Newman's company make salad dressing, as we all know, but ALSO a VAST variety of human and pet treats as well! :)
I got a great deal through Amazon on this pack of six bags, so I got two flavors and sizes for my dogs. They are ALL natural, and when you touch them yourself and feel the texture, and see the actual oats and cheese or whatnot for yourself, you will be so happy you are feeding them to your pet instead of crap food. People have no idea just how awful most name brand pet food is and that it is really like the equivalent of feeding junk food to their kids for every meal. But it's not our faults when pet food companies are abusing our trust.
Get these treats. You and your pets will be healthier for it . . . physically, mentally, spiritually.

HARMONY FARMS Healthy & Holistic Adult Dog Food Review

HARMONY FARMS Healthy and Holistic Adult Dog Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My doggie really likes Newman's Organic better than some other dog foods pet and big-box stores sell. My budget doesn't like Newman's Organic as much as Harmony Farms. It's the compromise that keeps the doggie AND my budget happy. Because he eats it heartily, I don't worry that he's getting enough high quality food. Otherwise he won't eat his food and he'll graze in the trash seeking egg shells and bones to fill the void.
There's no barfing, digestion problems or accidents. High Quality food means good digestion, a shiny coat, high energy, bright eyes and a good attitude WITHOUT tons of additional elixers, treats or vet bills. A definite cost effective WIN:WIN for doggie AND me.
I've had great results with Newman's Dog Food that I orderd through Amazon BUT there's 5 pounds LESS for about the same price.
Psst I'm not an organic fanatic, it's the nutritional value that counts for my fur baby and human kids!
Update 3/26/2011: Noticed this has jumped to almost THIRTY BUCKS, will opt for Newman's Organic when the costs per pound are the same...my dog likes BOTH Harmony and Newman, my budget likes the one most cost effective at the time of purchase :)

Instinct Grain-Free Chicken Meal Formula for Dogs, 25.3-Pound Bag Review

Instinct Grain-Free Chicken Meal Formula for Dogs, 25.3-Pound Bag
Average Reviews:

I have a 6 year old chocolate labrador retriever. Chip has been plagued with a dry itchy coat and profuse shedding for the past 5 yrs. My vet thought that he was allergic to grains and suggested I try the Nature's Variety GRAIN FREE dog food. After two months, chip's skin stopped flaking, his shedding reduced exponentailly and his coat was as shiny as when he was a pup. I was a skeptic in the beginning thinking that chip was on the pro plan diet and that was good, right? WRONG! I highly recommend this food. Do the research and find what low grade ingredients are in name brand pet foods on the market today. When all of the dog food poisionings and recalls happened you never seen this brand on the list. I truly am a believer in this product.

My dogs enjoyed the Lamb and Barley treats so well, I decided to try these beef and barley biscuits too. They are just as excited to eat these as they are the others. This is good news ! My dogs aren't real finicky, but they won't eat just anything and I want a good treat with no dyes or inferior products. The best of both worlds for us.
Happy tails swinging in the wind, and smiling faces...what more could I ask for ?

Solid Gold Barking at the Moon Dry Dog Food 33lb Review

Solid Gold Barking at the Moon Dry Dog Food 33lb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After the cat food scare we began to look at what we were feeding ALL of our pets, and the ingredients listed were scary. For a long time we made their food from meat/eggs/poultry, vegetables, brown rice and some pasta. When I finally found Barking at the Moon Solid Gold pet food, I substituted it for the amount of whatever protein source I was using, still mixing it with brown rice and vegetables--whatever was on hand that would not hurt them. Our two GSDs have lost weight, and our nine year old, 110 pound male dog is behaving like a dog half his age. We also switched to Solid Gold dry cat food, and over the first three weeks our spayed female is less bloated and has lost two pounds, her coat is gleaming, and she is now as sleek as she ever was. It's a remarkable product that makes far more difference than I would have expected any diet change to make!

Average Reviews:

When I read the ingredients of these treats I thought for sure that my dogs would like these. I have 3 large breed dogs which usually love to eat just about anything. I have Rocky, a black and tan coonhound, Buddy, a blue heeler and a very large pit bull named Hutch. Rocky and Buddy have turned up their noses in disdain to these treats everytime I have offered them. The pit bull Hutch will eat them very grudgingly and even then he'll leave half of the treat on the ground, this is odd because, he'll eat just about anything including tree branches. So, I wouldn't pay the higher price for these treats, my dogs just don't like them.

I adopted a retired greyhound racer a few years ago.
No matter which dog food I tried her upset stomach came back.
In desparation I went the organic holistic route. A few month ago I started her on Paw Naturaw which I found over the internet.
The food arrived, every time I ordered, well packed in ice. My beautiful hound with her delicate stomach is thriving on her new diet. We haven't had an upset stomach since.
Thanks PAW.

Castor & Pollux Organix Adult Canine Formula Review

We used to have two pomeranians - Autumn and Teddie. Ever since we lost Teddie last summer, Autumn became very depressed and wouldn't eat. We tried so many different brands including home-cooked, he would only ate a couple times and wouldn't touch it anymore. He lost so much weight and got us so worried. But that all changed when we found Organix and that's the only brand Autumn will eat. Now he can't wait until I feed him every morning. The cost Amazon offered is less expenisve than other retailers and you can't beat free shipping!! Please continue carrying it!!

Before Grain Variety Pack Canned Cat Food Review

Before Grain Variety Pack Canned Cat Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 13ish yr old cat was recently diagnosed with some form of liver disease - (he adopted me 3 yrs ago when I got married since he was my husband's) and wasn't eating very much - some roasted turkey meat and some cheese (he is normally fed canned cat food) not even his favorite Fancy Feast was enticing. The Vet recommended Science Diet Hills AD and my cat barely touched it. So I went shopping for anything he would eat since he HAS to gain some weight and came across BG cans sitting in the aisle waiting to be stocked/shelved. I was amazed at the plain ingredients and figured I would give it a try - I bought the turkey, the chicken and the quail (I wish there was rabbit) but he devoured the turkey - the entire can! later on he had the chicken and this morning he had quail for the first time in his life and ate half the can :D so far things are looking great! He is taking his meds as well so we have hope. I will update this review in the next week or so.
*****************
update April 2010: He still eats these and the dry version and also Innova's EVO Turkey and Chicken combo & the Beef (both dry and canned). He has maintained his weight but recent blood work says he is on *borrowed time* and the thoough meds have helped (Predisone and Denosyl) w/o eating, no meds would have kept him alive and happy for this long so TYVM Before Grain and Innova EVO! Btw, he also devours unseasoned grilled london broil that I chop up in the blender for him (since cats don't really chew, this is easier for his digestion) it is slightly extra work, but he is worth it.
*****************
Update April 5, 2011: As of this writing, my cat will now only eat Before Grain chicken/quail canned in addition to another brand. I think he gets very bored with the same food day after day and/or companies change their products with out notifying consumers. I have eliminated kibble from his diet altogether and the majority of his food is canned & non-seasoned baked chicken breast shredded in a blender. Even the Evo Turkey/chicken dry he loved so much for many months is no longer enticing to him. He now prefers Naturesvariety.com Instinct canned cat food over any other brand. However, if I feed him too much of the same flavor in one week, I notice his interest wanes, so I alternate flavors. He does not care for the Rabbit nor the Beef tho. He has managed to maintain his 11lbs without medications for 6 mos and he recently turned 15yrs old. :} He is an affectionate gentle giant of a tabby so his health and nutrition are very important to me as I love him to bits. We will be attempting the Instinct raw medallions of lamb soon since the Instinct canned lamb is his favorite. His yearly vet checkup is later this month. Will update for those interested.

Nature's Variety Freeze-Dried Raw Small Bites for Dogs and Cats, Chicken Formula, 2.9 oz Review

Nature's Variety Freeze-Dried Raw Small Bites for Dogs and Cats, Chicken Formula, 2.9 oz
Average Reviews:

Nature's Variety is one of the best pet foods out there; one look at the ingredients and you'll agree. I'd love to feed my poodle/pap mix raw food because of her skin allergies, but she doesn't really like it. She really likes these little freeze dried medallions though. It looks like freeze-dried raw is going to be the way of the future, but until it's more mainstream I can only afford to give it as a treat.

Castor & Pollux Ultramix Canine Fomula, Beef, Vegetables & Barley, 13.2-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12) Review

Castor and Pollux Ultramix Canine Fomula, Beef, Vegetables and Barley, 13.2-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent many years studying canine nutrition and it is fairly appalling how many of the major diseases and health issues began when we stopped feeding dogs table scraps and began feeding them processed foods. (See studies by Dr Pitcairn) Now granted, this was still a progression because toxins like onions were eliminated from their diet but poor quality processed foods, the same each day, are no mystery: we would suffer health issues if we chose that diet for life, and they need health as much as we do.
Primary issues: the vitamins added in most foods are then cooked which means they are left deactivated; most foods are made for profit meaning they have mostly fillers and food not fit for human consumption and can even be high in allergens such as soy or corn, leaving chronic itching, poor coat, etc.
But the main issue, aside from it being poor nutrition, in 99% of dog food is that it's not food grade meat. Why would this matter? I've actually visited the places that proved why this mattered. In Hereford, TX they raise the majority of beef used in this country. (Your suitcase will arrive back home after the flight here reeking of cow manure. But it's a pretty city.) In front of me a bulldozer was picking up cows that just dropped dead or were in the process. I wanted to scream. I asked what happens to them and was told they are taken to the local dog food manufacturer...which is why the dog food manufacturers are built near large cattle farms. In a nutshell, free diseased meat. Cows don't go to a morgue to see why they died or what disease or virus they had. They go straight into dog food.
Can't believe this? Think back a few years ago when dogs were dying and there was a massive pet food recall. This was because most of the companies drew from the same downed livestock. There were only a handful of companies that were not on the recall list. These were the very, very few that use food grade meat. What that means? Meat meant for food. Appalling huh? Dogs are usually forced to eat non food grade meat.
Food grade meat is marked as such on the can. You will rarely find it. Newman's Own is an example of one of the very few I've found that use meat inspected for human consumption...i.e. food grade.
However, I've got one dog who for whatever reason doesn't like the taste of Newman's Own. She was raised, prior to my owning her, on cheap dog food and I swear she hates vitamins and good beef or something. (their products are also balanced for nutritional benefit)
So I do supplement her diet back and forth. I like that Ultramix is built better than most dog foods. The nutritional profile and ingredients are well balanced and well thought out. There are no byproducts (the parts that no one would want to eat being ground up) there are good solid veggies like spinach and some fruit mixed in and it has an excellent vitamin profile. It has a very small amount of garlic (garlic in large quantities will hurt your dog's liver and kidneys but in very small measured amounts is a natural flea and worm preventative.)
My dogs love the taste
The drawback is that it's not human grade or food grade meat so yes, you are still subject to use of downed and diseased cattle when it's not. So I don't use this often but for my dog who won't eat Newman's Own and for when I don't have time to mix up a good homemade meal, I do look for alternatives to supplement.
It amazes me how in today's time there are still foods served to any animals that are, by all FDA standards, "not fit for human consumption". There is a rise in homes preparing homemade meals. Veterinary schools are funded by dog food companies but extensive studies show that issues we have today were all but unheard of prior to their poor processed food diets. And vegetables and fruits are important for pets which are often overlooked. Think they don't eat them naturally? If your dog sees grass and begins chewing, it's a way of getting these into their diet. In nature, the first part of an animal a wild dog, coyote, or wolf, will eat is the stomach of the rabbit or what he kills for food. This is where they get their vegetable content naturally. In reality, in the wild their diets are very similar to our own...except they aren't cooked! But the balance of fresh meats and vegetables is actually similar. They do not eat ground corn and fillers in nature but do get minerals and vitamins in naturally--many of which are depleted in most dog food manufacturing even if they are added in because of the high temps in processing.
This is a good natural and balanced food without fillers. It is not food grade. Add that and it will be perfect with no risk of health concerns. Many have no idea that illnesses can be born from downed cattle or diseased fowl. Unless pets start dying food is not recalled and the health issues are never connected. This needs to be changed.Human grade meats cost more and many have no idea why the few dog foods that use it are more expensive as I think there is little marketing and education regarding this. It took years of study and discussions from a rising population of informed vets to understand it myself.
Unfortunately, not one day of veterinary school is spent on learning nutrition. It is spent on curing health problems rather than preventing them with a proper diet. That education has to come from self-learning after veterinary school. And I applaud the rise in vets who are doing it, now that we know how our own diets effect us learn term and can shorten our own lives.
While still better than most dog foods, it has one more leap to make it perfect. But many won't pay more for the pet foods that have it so I applaud at least the small part of change this has.

Paw Naturaw Organic Sweet Potato Treats for Small Pets, 4-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 4) Review

Paw Naturaw Organic Sweet Potato Treats for Small Pets, 4-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ordered these on a whim when purchasing another Paw Naturaw product from Amazon. Lighter than air, these are dehydrated sweet potatoes shaved uber-thin with the skins.
My dog was ultra excited as I opened the bag and she snatched the offered chip out of my hand - then promptly dropped it when she realized it was a vegetable and not a piece of beef jerky! At my insistence, she reluctantly picked it up and gave it another go. I think the crunchy texture was what won her over in trying it out, and after a few crunches, it was gone! She now eats them happily when offered so we're both happy.
WAY too expensive for what it is - dehydrated sweet potatoes - and not much in the bag. I'd say if you put them together to create an actual whole spud it would constitute 2 medium potatoes - probably less. Hence the 3 stars.
I own a food dehydrator and will make my own from now on, but for someone who doesn't want to go through the hassle or doesn't have a dehydrator (and has money to throw around) these would be a great alternative to chemical laden dog snacks.

I read labels. I was really happy to see a dog food free of 'poultry by products' and other questionable items. The pieces are small, the taste must be good as our dog gobbles this up like candy. Since switching from another 'vet sold' pet food, our pooch's health, looks, sleep, demeanor and well everything is much much better. He is an extremely active dog and this food provides easily accessible nutrients and bulk. We live in the backwoods of Montana and now we will have to mail order it in. Even with the added expense, it's worth every dime. Simply...... THE BEST.

My dogs and I are thrilled with this food. It is absolutely one of the very best available. They love the taste and I'm so happy with the results we get from Paw Naturaw. One of our rescued dogs developed severe allergies as a result of getting all the vaccines at once from the animal shelter. This young, beautiful boy was miserable just 3 weeks after receiving those vaccines. We had been feeding them home cooked, organic food but switched over to Paw Naturaw when our holistic vet told us he has seen wonderful results with animals who eat raw, organic food. It's worked a miracle for this dog who now has no allergy symptoms at all!
Thank you Paw Naturaw for making such a quality product. We will never feed our dogs anything else.

After searching for the right dog food, I think I have finally found it. The standard over processed stuff you find in the stores, even the higher end "natural" brands don't even come close to this. This food is nothing but the real deal. When you put the water into it, it actually smells like the items in it. There is no need for extra oils etc. I have four dogs who start barking as soon as the water goes into it and it soaks. They can't wait to eat now! I am going to try all the various flavors. It took about three weeks for their systems to adjust but now they seem totally fine and have no issues. If you get worried about their stools, just wait. You need to introduce this food gradually and you will be rewarded with dogs that seem to have a lot more energy.
