Northern Industrial #12 Electric Meat Grinder Review

Northern Industrial #12 Electric Meat Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband and I have been using electric grinders to make our cats' food since 1998 (used hand grinders prior to that). We have both the Tasin and this NT grinder.
I received the Tasin as a gift but needed another one b/c we were in the process of a cross-country move and we each needed a grinder as he had 2 of our cats, and I had the other 2 w/ me. I am so glad I checked amazon first before shelling out 2x as much for another Tasin. Reason being - they are practically if not actually, one and the same.
The wattage is the only thing that on paper is slightly higher on the Tasin, but it's the wattage *during* grinding that is the important factor. And the grinding speed seems the same to me. We use the reverse button a lot on both grinders; it's a handy feature our old Villaware grinder did not have.
If I had to do it over, which one would I buy? - NT b/c a) It's more readily available i.e from amazon than from some unknown person on the internet, and b) I'd rather pay less, so the winner again is NT from Amazon. FWIW, I paid $129 for my NT purchased from amazon (what can I say, I was in a rush and couldn't wait for a price decrease), but at the time Tasin cost way more than I see it selling for now ($150-200) so it was still a better deal.
At the price the NT's selling for nowadays ($90-100) on amazon, it's a no-brainer. My husband and I grind around 25lbs of meat at a time. It takes us about 1.5 hrs from set-up time till loading up the dishwasher. This grinder actually seems to do better w/ bones than just meat. I'd suggest alternating supplements and meat, as well as alternate veggies (if you use any) and meat when feeding through the grinder chute. Thaw the veggies a little first as I have found it makes it easier to grind, but meat is easier to grind when it's semi-frozen.
We typically grind whole chicken fryers and whole rabbits for our cats. Only recently did we try turkey. I was skeptical about the turkey but hubby cut the longer heavier bones (e.g. leg) length-wise and grinding was a breeze. We were able to grind almost an entire 14lb turkey. Very cool.
When in doubt, mash bones up first, and you'll have no problems. So far, I'm happy w/ both the Tasin and NT grinders. I've had both for about 3 yrs now.
The only complaint I have w/ both grinders is that after the very first wash, the metal turned into a dark ugly color. Also the small parts such as the grinding plate tend to rust more easily than my old Villaware, so that's the reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Seems to me quality issues pop up for most appliances these days:(
Oh another thing - don't be fooled by the bigger-seeming intake chutes on this grinder (and the Tasin) than say the older Villaware b/c you'll still need to chop up the meat into smallish pieces to fit 'em into the chute. There's no getting around that unless you buy a huge $2,000 restaurant-style grinder that weighs a ton.
Hope this review helps:)

KitchenAid SSA Sausage Stuffer Kit Attachment for Food Grinder Review

KitchenAid SSA Sausage Stuffer Kit Attachment for Food Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started learning about sausage stuffing in order to make a good andouille for jambalaya, gumbo, etc. Most decent equipment out there will run anywhere from $[...]-$[...] for a decent stuffer. Double that total and you can get a grinder as well. If you're going to make consistently large batches (25 lbs or more at a time) then you're probably going to want to invest in those.
However, if you're just learning and starting out and already have a KitchenAid and the associated grinder, then the stuffing attachment for less than $10 is a no-brainer. I've used it a couple of times now and I can say that it makes high-quality sausage without a problem.
I have noted a couple of negative reviews for this product. Not knowing the specifics of how those people used the product, I can note some things I learned on my own, and from a site. That is an excellent site about andouille and sausage stuffing in general (especially with a KitchenAid).
1. When grinding, make sure the blade is in. I forgot to do this on my first batch and it turned the meat into paste and was impossible to get the grinder to work properly (which is why they include it).
2. Make sure you keep the meat very cold. I haven't had to cool the attachments, although that might help, especially when the meat isn't the coldest.
3. Use the coarse grind plate for sausage. You can the fine grind plate (for hot dogs for example), but I would recommend just using the coarse plate and running the meat through multiple times for a finer grind on your sausage. The grinder can get some tissue wrapped around the feeder and it could require some disassembly and cleaning (might take 3-5 minutes), especially with the fine grind plate. After the first grind, the mixture moves through the grinder pretty quickly anyway.
4. Make sure the screw cap is tight. Meat can escape through the cap if you're not careful. It shouldn't in most cases though. If it is, this is a sign something else is probably wrong.
5. I bought the KitchenAid FT Food Tray Attachment for Stand Mixers as well. It's fairly handy for larger batches and I recommend it, but it's not necessary. I ground 15 lbs the other night and it was helpful in holding the larger amounts.
6. You'll see this other places, but I'll reiterate that natural casings are worth the extra (minimal) effort. There's not much to it once you've used them. Collagen is ok and are less likely to break, but natural aren't as fragile as you might think and they look and taste way better. I was a little leery of natural and bought collagen initially, but haven't used them since my first batch. I don't think I'll go back if I don't have to.
I've stuffed andouille and Italian sausage both with the larger of the two stuffer attachments. If I make some breakfast sausage, I imagine the smaller one will come in handy. If you're like me and you've gotten to this point, next on your list will probably be a smoker. I haven't taken that plunge yet, but it's coming soon.
Good luck and happy stuffing!

Norpro Ceramic Compost Keeper Review

Norpro Ceramic Compost Keeper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this thinking it would look better than stainless steel. We love to compost and this pail sure beats keeping a bucket on the counter. However, it is heavy and the handle is poorly made. When you life up the handle it comes off of the clunky clips on the side. This really needs to be redesigned.
We removed the poor handle after the first trip to the compost. The ceramic is not only heavy, but it is also much harder to keep clean that the stainless steel. The ceramic tends to pick up stains which are hard to scrub out. And of course there is always the fear of breaking it.
As long as the filter is kept clean and fresh, the pail emits no odors. Whether you choose stainless steel or ceramic, make sure you buy some extra filters. You'll be happy you did.

In addition to being perfectly sized for collecting food scraps for your garden or municipal composter--from potato peels and carrot tops to egg shells and coffee grounds--this 1-gallon compost keeper from Norpro also offers an attractive look for your kitchen. It features a smoother ceramic exterior in red that's also easy to clean. The tight fitting lid works in concert with an included charcoal filter to keep odors in the pail and not wafting through your kitchen. It also features a sturdy stainless steel handle. It measures 10-1/2 by 8 by 7-1/4 inches (HxWxD). The interior and exterior clean easily with soapy sponge.

"STX TURBOFORCE 3000 SERIES - 1800 WATT" 2.4 HP RATED ELECTRIC MEAT GRINDER - 3 HARDENED STEEL CUTTING BLADES - SAUSAGE STUFFING TUBES Review

STX TURBOFORCE 3000 SERIES - 1800 WATT 2.4 HP RATED ELECTRIC MEAT GRINDER - 3 HARDENED STEEL CUTTING BLADES - SAUSAGE STUFFING TUBES
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me and for my wife, cooking is a kind of a hobby. Before buying a meat grinder, we analyzed several models. The first conclusion: the most important feature of a meat grinder is the engine power. This STX has a powerful 1,800 watts engine, more than enough to all of the duties of a home kitchen (and maybe even of a small restaurant). Other meat grinders with smaller engines, such as 500W or 800W, will not fit for heavy duty (10 or more pounds at once), nor will be able to deal with some kinds of meat.
After some research, we ordered it from Amazon. The delivery time was as promised. The machine was very well packed in a so protective box.
Our first test of the product revealed that we made the right choice. Some points to highlight:
1. Most parts are polished aluminum. So easy for cleaning, very nice appearance;
2. The finishing is careful at every detail. It is clearly a good quality product;
3. It works wonderfully. The powerful engine is far more than enough for regular meat;
4. The ground meat texture results very similar to that from a supermarket grinder. I've seen other home meat grinders that produced a kind of a paste. This one, however, preserves the texture as it should be: perfect for hamburgers, tartar beef and so on;
5. It is so easy to assemble/disassemble and to operate. Impossible to mistake;
6. Despite we didn't use it yet, the sausage kit will be very helpful.
In short, this is a 5 stars product, no doubts about that.
But we had a problem: the aluminum parts are NOT dishwasher safe. We didn't notice that, and what went to the dishwasher was damaged: the shining was gone and those parts became some rough to touch. So, I contacted the seller (The Mercantile Station) and asked them the price of the replacing parts, since I would buy them. What a pleasant surprise: they promptly sent me an email asking for my address, and they kindly offered to send the parts for free (despite, I must stress, the damage was caused by me).
What an elegant attitude! So, would Amazon allow it, the seller would deserve SIX stars.
IMPORTANT NOTE: a few months after we bought our STX, the engine was improved to 2,000 watts, i.e, an increase of about 11%. I'd guess that, with this new and more powerful engine, the machine will able to perform an even heavier duty. My one is still working so fine, no complaints at all.

Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 Pieces Review

Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 Pieces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a plant-based product, and does not belong in your compost. I looked up degradable versus biodegradable. Degradable plastics are still made from ordinary petroleum-based granules, called nurdles. These raw plastic pellets that are commonly found in our oceans do not contain any additives which helps break down the plastic. While they do break down into smaller particles, chemical residues eventually show up in the food chain and our bodies. The bottom line is that any plastic that is petroleum-based will contribute to the pollution of our environment and has a harmful effect on human and animal health. (via greenflavour dot blogspot dot com)
This product is legal but inappropriate. Do you want to go green? Get rid of plastics. (If you don't want to stop using the bags you have left, at least recycle them, don't put them in your compost.)

Nesco American Harvest 5-Tray FD-35 425-Watt Snackmaster Dehydrator Review

Nesco American Harvest 5-Tray FD-35 425-Watt Snackmaster Dehydrator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose a top-element dehydrator as it's easier to clean (no drips onto the bottom element.) This dehydrator has sturdy, slightly flexible plastic trays. It's a bit noisy; when the heat goes on there is a whine I don't like, and the fan of course is noisy too. So making dehydrated foods (takes hours) needs a separate room, maybe the cellar.
The price is right on this dehydrator, but you need sheets for making jerky and fruit leathers. They aren't included (that's the minus-a-star) but you can pick them up at kitchen supply stores.

Ateco Cookie Cutter Sets Review

Ateco Cookie Cutter Sets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the years, I've collected lots of cookie cutters. I keep most of them in a plastic storage box in my pantry because I try to keep my kitchen drawers from getting too cluttered. However, I do keep some of my sets of Ateco boxed cutters in a drawer because their storage cans are small and compact, and I use them a lot. Ateco is a quality manufacturer of baking accessories. I own several of their products: a revolving round metal cake stand; a large pastry decorating set, including icing bags and tips; and baking spatulas.
The Ateco line of boxed cutter sets includes cookie cutters with holiday and seasonal designs; a bridge set; sets with hearts, stars, animals, toy shapes, alphabet letters, gingerbread families; mini cookie cutters; dog bone biscuit cutters; pie cutters; aspic or jelly cutters; and biscuit/pastry cutters - some come in boxes, and others come in storage cans, like this one. This set has 11 plain round stainless steel cutters in graduated shapes, from 3/4 inch to 3 5/8 inches. They nest perfectly in their storage can, which has a tight lid so the cutters don't spill out into the drawer.
I only use a few of these round cutters on a regular basis though. I find that most of the cutters are too small for anything other than specialty baking. Although Ateco says that their cutters are dishwasher-safe, I hand wash mine because I've found that the dishwasher doesn't always get them clean.

Ateco's Plain Round Cutter Set includes eleven cutters with plain edges. Cutters made of stainless steel and range in size from 3/4 to 3 5/8-inches. Cutters are perfect for cutting pastry, cookies, dough, or as a form for food. By Ateco. Since 1905, Ateco has supplied fine restaurants and bakeries with quality built, specialty baking tools. Ateco products are internationally renowned for their high quality. When you use Ateco products, you're not only enjoying quality craftsmanship, you're also enjoying quality design; the products are a result of over one hundred years and four generations of innovation and development.

8 Piece Stainless Steel Prep Bowls Set with Lids Review

8 Piece Stainless Steel Prep Bowls Set with Lids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WARNING-My experience with this item: I purchased a set of these because I wanted stainless to store my child's food in the fridge, not plastic with the chemicals that come along with that. I thought these would be perfect because they are small and have lids. I used them for about a month, and of course they were hand washed thoroughly initially and between uses.
I was shocked when one day I was using a spatula to remove a light colored food out of one of the bowls and noticed "gray" on the food. Sure enough, I scraped my fingernail against the bowl and the finish was coming off in the food!!! I tried each bowl (rubbing with my fingernail) and each did that. I had washed and used these bowls several times prior to this, this could not of been some leftover "coating" or something from manufacturing. Stainless does not "come off". I don't know what these bowls are made of, but I am horrified to think what had been getting into my child's food for weeks. Lead? Cadium? Lord knows what these are made of. The company has been unresponsive to my inquiries. BTW, they are made in Vietnam.

IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container Combo, 11-12-Quart and 30-33 Quart Container Review

IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container Combo, 11-12-Quart and 30-33 Quart Container
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review was written for several airtight storgae containers that we have bought on here under the Iris brand. We own:
- 2 pc pet food container set. To be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Iris-Airtight-2%252dpc%252e-Food-Container/dp/B000GABN7I/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1231380086&sr=8-38
- 30 quart container: http://www.amazon.com/Iris-301042-MP-8-Airtight-Container/dp/B000VZXRS6/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1231380086&sr=8-34
- 55 quart container: http://www.amazon.com/Iris-NMP-L-Premium-Airtight-Container/dp/B00186RU26/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1231380013&sr=8-16
- and a smaller 21 quart container with one major difference other than size: no coasters/wheels.
Background you can skip:
We eat rice. Lots of it. Every day. Our home is the castle of ricealot. And then the Mrs. loves incompatible pets: Cats and Fish. Luckily we keep them separated in 2 categories: indoor cats and outdoor fish.
So what we need was affordable AIRTIGHT storage that would allow us to buy 25 to 50 lbs bulk items of Koi food, rice, cat food. Oh yeah: Mrs. also insist we eat only home baked bread (see bread machine review elsewhere) made out of spelt flour. This is either ridiculously expensive to buy in small quantities locally or, if bought online, not efficient from a shipping cost perspective unless we buy lots of it at once. So we needed containers that:
- are airtight
- mobile even when heavy / full
- able to pack a lot
- last with frequent use
Our findings:
The containers all came (except the 21 qt as it has no wheels) with wheels that you have to push into the bottom of the containers. That's the only assembly. Be ready to use some excessive force to push some in (but eventually they will go, maybe use a little oil if some are a real tight fit). Wifey opted to use my overweighted-ness (= new word)to push 'em in with force. Glad I'm too heavy.
The lids are basically clip on lids that have a little rim of foam to create the seal. Note that they are AIRTIGHT which does not equal VACUUM. One of the lids was a little short on foam but by redistributing it a bit with my thumb I was able to get it corrected.
I do have a little bit of doubt that all of them are airtight because of the lids however: the lids differ between the various sized as to how they latch closed (look at pictures before you buy). I found them all to work fairly well in that they open and close without Mrs. needing new nails so it scores in that respect.
The plastic is not so thin that it will crack under too much weight (i.e. it can hold what it was made for).
The wheels all rolled well and did not have trouble under full load.
The shape / form factor: these are narrow rather than wide so that you can fit several next to one another. Convenient as you don't want to stack heavy items. Notable exception is the 2pc version I bought where the upper bin is short and a little wide.
Conclusion:
These are decent value for the price on here. They handle the bulk foods well and we think that the food is genuinely protected better and easily accessible. The wheels are very convenient and the airtighted-ness (another new word!!) is fine but do spot check the foam seam.
We reduced our rating with one star for the fact that there is no clarity on the TYPE of plastic that is used for these. Since food will be in there for a while you'd hope it is the 'good' stuff. Given all the web-attention to water bottles and what they are and should be made of, you'd think Iris would be more forthcoming. BPA (Bisphenol A) is the alledged culprint and the fact that authorities are claiming how safe it is (see: http://www.ific.org/publications/qa/upload/Update-Q-A-on-Bisphenol-A_10-20-08.pdf) makes my triple-cringe. Anyways, until there are large BPA-free ones that are affordable I'll have to take the leap.
Hope you enjoy these!
PS: we bought 1 extra 30 qt to use under the kitched sink as an easy garbage can that can be pulled out a little. Maybe you can even use there to store dirty laundry in for months at a time: no smell!! Mrs. thinks not.

BioBag MaxAir Compost Bucket 1 ea Review

BioBag MaxAir Compost Bucket 1 ea
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had this compost bucket for a year and we are really happy with it.
It may not be the prettiest, but it is by far the best one we've found.
What we like:
* It has a relatively low footprint, especially considering the capacity. It usually takes us about 2 days to fill it up.
* Convenient to use -It has a hinged lid. When you are cooking, you can lift the lid, and it stays open. Once you are done, you just push it lightly to close.
* It closes well, so there are no odors escaping, and no chance for fruit flies to breed.
* When we first bought it, our place had a ton of happy fruit flies parading all over the kitchen. The fruit flies were gone within two weeks of getting the composter.
* We have it on our countertop, but it is small enough to store it under the sink. It is relatively light, and has a handle, so it is easy to take out and put it back in.
* The bags are fully compostable. They may seem pricey, but a package with 25 bags usually lasts a couple of months.
* Since the scraps go inside the compostable bag, the bucket itself stays relatively clean. With other, better looking compost buckets, you have to thoroughly clean out the container each time you empty it, and those rotten scraps can get kind of gross -- not a problem with this one.
* Unlike other systems, there is no filter to purchase.
Overall, we are very happy with this compost bucket.
