However, we bought this bowl to provide our medium size dog with the ability to get a drink of water where there might not be other water sources around while we are hiking or out and about. The bowl is HUGE which meant that just to get a 1/2 inch of water in the bottom of the bowl for our dog to get a drink seemed like it would require a whole quart. Probably not, but it seemed that way. We bought a less expensive bowl which was much smaller and is perfect. Hope this helps.
