I have used fish oil for my 2 year old Aussie almost since he was a puppy. He had mild skin allergies and would scratch all night during the summer grass season. The vet was a little down on the prognosis, given that he was a puppy and already having skin allergies, but she prescribed some steroid pills. Though they helped, they were far too expensive to continue regularly as a week's worth was $80. Benadryl helped some, but mostly just made him sleepy, and he still scratched. So, on a lark, I tried fish oil. I had read that it was good for skin and coat, so I put two and two together and gave it a shot.
Within a couple of weeks or so, he had almost completely stopped scratching and was resting well through the night. I'm not sure if this was purely due to the fish oil or due to the season of whatever it was he was specifically allergic to passing, but he was definitely feeling better. He's been on some form of fish oil ever since, on a daily basis, and has never had that level of skin allergies again. His eyes will still get red and water from time to time, but very little of the dramatic scratching has returned. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say he's 90-95% better.
So, being 2 years old, I've tried him on various fish oil brands, pretty much whatever I picked up off the shelf at the local pet store. He's not very particular about his food, and takes pills in food well. However, there were one or two brands of fish oil that he was reluctant to eat. He always finished them off, but sometimes they were the last things in the bowl.
With these pills, however, he actively searches them out from the kibble and eats them first. He may not hardly touch the rest of the food in the morning, but he will always hunt these out. He seems to think they are candy. He absolutely loves them. I'm impressed enough that I'm going to continue to order this brand as long as I can find it.
One interesting tidbit about these that is not well described in the Amazon page, these gel pills are shaped like a blue capsule with a Y-shaped tail on them. Not only is this a bit of a cutesy marketing gimmick, it's a functional feature. Rather than have to dig out a pin to prick the capsule and spray it on the food, this permits a simple twist-off motion to break off the "tail" and then squeeze the fish oil out. My dog likes the whole pill, so I've never had to do this, but I'm aware of people whose pets are a bit more finicky and who have to squeeze out the fish oil on the food or in the dog's mouth. This would greatly simplify that task and likely make a little less mess.
Overall, very happy with these, even though they're a bit more expensive than some brands. It's keeping his coat shiny, his skin allergies calm, and apparently his mouth happy.
